Newport Elementary Students Learn about Future Career and College Pathways
Third-grade students at Newport Elementary School (NES) are learning about a variety of college and career pathways through Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). Students researched the careers they are interested in pursuing and wrote letters to colleges with matching career paths.
One student, Zach W., wrote to Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) about becoming an educator. On March 16, Dr. Kandy Noles Stevens from SMSU visited Zach’s class to encourage students to pursue their goals and read aloud her children’s book, No Puppy. Each student in the class went home with a copy of her book and SMSU school gear.
“The letters from the students and responses from the colleges were so personal and made us feel so special,” said Mrs. Kestner, a third-grade teacher at NES. “Our third graders learned so much with this research and can visualize themselves in the future.”
